Although young people may not use email to communicate with friends and peers, I don't think that means they aren't using it. After all Myspace and Facebook both send email notifications every time something is updated - I believe most users access these sites through email.

As an avid Facebook user (plus a whole slew of other similar networks), it is the primary method I use to communicate with friends. HOWEVER - I still much prefer marketing messages from companies to be in my inbox, not interfering with my "social time." I wouldn't be surprised if that were the attitude of most of these youth.
